‘Arab Idol’ Rules
Arab Idol is broken down into several stages, auditions, Top 20, Top 10 and repertoire.
Contestants go through at least three sets of cuts. Although auditions can exceed thousands in each country, only hundreds make it past the preliminary auditions. Successful contestants sing in front of producers where more may be cut, then they proceed to audition in front of the judges, which is the only audition stage shown on television. Those selected by the judges receive a ticket to advance to Beirut.
Once in Beirut, the contestants perform individually or in groups in a series of rounds.
- The contestants perform in groups but sing individually
- In the first round the contestants emerge in groups based on a theme but perform individually.
- Followed by one final solo round to determine the semi-finalists.
At the end of this stage of the competition, usually 20 contestants are selected to move on to the semi-final stage, but sometimes more than twenty are selected .
The Top 20 and than Top 10 contestants are selected after many auditions. Each contestant performs a song on stage in front of a live audience and the judges every Friday. A 24 hour time period is given to viewers to vote. The fate of the contestants is then decided by public vote.
The contestant who receives the lowest number of votes is eliminated during the results show , and this every week, until there is one left. Arab Idol winner who is determined by viewers votes receives various prizes ( 2012 prizes included recording contract with Platinum Records for a debut album, and a Chevrolet Corvette)
Egyptian Carmen Souleiman was crowned ‘ Arab Idol ‘ 2012 winner on March 24, 2012, in a tough competition against Dounia Batma from Morocco. (Video below)
